The garden program at Mockingbird Elementary has been part of the students’ experience at the school since 1996. But in late 2008, after funding for the program was eliminated, the Mockingbird Elementary community stepped up to keep this model program alive through our donations and work. Since then, the program has been entirely funded by the community! In early 2009, dedicated garden program supporters founded a new non-profit organization,The Garden at Mockingbird Elementary, to channel the broad community support for sustaining the program.
Our organization supports instruction, maintenance and outreach in the garden. We also reach out to the community, working to make our program stronger and bring new opportunities to our students, such as a new focus on cooking and healthy eating. We also collaborate with other educators in the region to help them launch school garden programs and make the most of them for their students.
There is always work to be done, for everyone from the novice to the green thumb or master carpenter. We welcome and appreciate your help! We also need lots of help that does NOT involve getting your hands dirty at all! We welcome all talents.
For those that don’t mind playing in the dirt, please join us for our community work days, held about once each month, or come by on your own schedule. Bring your kids, get to know your community, and feel good about making a hands-on contribution to this great school garden. Bring your work gloves, your nippers, and clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. We have fun, so come on out!
